· Monitors speakers are usually housed in wedge shaped cabinets which are then placed on the floor directly in front of the intended user.
· Drum fill speakers are monitors catering solely for the requirements of a drummer.
· Side fills are upright speakers placed to the side of the stage.
· Monitors are available in passive (requiring an external power amplifier) and active (built in amplifiers) formats.
· Also available are in-ear monitors which consist of a headset and ear phones which channel a monitor mix directly into a performer’s ears. This reduces the potential for feedback.
· Monitors are controlled by either the main front of house mixing console or via a dedicated monitor desk situated at the side of stage position.
Monitor speakers are not necessary for every type of event such as small scale speech only events where it is likely the presenter will be able to hear him/herself sufficiently from the front of house PA system. A monitoring system is though highly recommended or vital for the following types of event.
Large scale conference events – it is recommended that some form of monitoring be in place when presenters are positioned on a large stage and are addressing a sizable auditorium. This will allow them to clearly make out their speech and any other audio that may be running through the PA system such as other presenters, backing tracks or video feeds.
Live music events – Particularly for large scale events on sizable stages, each musician will expect access to a monitor and preferably with their own particular mix. For smaller live music events this may not be possible due to space, budget and equipment restrictions and the increased potential for feedback. If you are planning a live music event discuss with the musicians any particular monitor requirements they may have prior to booking the hire.
DJ events – Professional DJs will require a booth monitor to allow them to effectively mix records. If you have a DJ booked for an upcoming corporate event discuss their particular equipment requirements with them before completing the AVRent.co.uk quote form. You can then be sure that all the necessary equipment is booked before the event.
