Also known as a spot light, the follow spot is the traditional piece of lighting hire equipment used to highlight and follow a particular person across a stage.
Positioned at the rear of an event room and controlled and maneuvered by a dedicated operator the follow spot tends to be a sizable piece of equipment that requires an elevated position to ensure you get the best results. Follow spots can have dimmer and shutter functions and can also be supplied with colour gel filters to change the colour of the light.
Hiring a spot light can have the following benefits at your event:
Performer emphasis - Follow spots allow performers to be emphasised whatever their position on stage. This is particularly useful for events such as theatre performances, live music performances and corporate events where a presenter is mobile when on-stage.
Colour, dimmer, shutter - Most hire follow spots available on the audio visual lighting hire market can have colour gels fitted to allow beam colour changes, have dimmer functions and shutters available to cancel out the light altogether.
When renting a follow spot the following considerations should be taken into account:
Elevated position required - To ensure the follow spot beam is uninterupted it should be elevated above the position of the stage and audience. As such an elevated platform may need to be installed at the rear of the auditorium to cater for this.
Operator required - An operator will be required to maneuver the spot light across the stage area as the performer moves about. It is not a complex job so an experienced operator may not be necessary but if you do need a lighting engineer to operate the follow spot take this into account in your event budget.
